Syllabus
Religion and Worldviews Syllabus
Leicester City Council Agreed Syllabus
This new agreed syllabus is the culmination of nearly two years of collaborative work involving Wendy Harrison (Consultant RE Adviser), teachers’ advisory groups, members of Leicester SACRE, representatives from various religious and worldview communities, as well as national experts and numerous other stakeholders.
The resulting syllabus is rigorous and detailed, with the potential to significantly enhance the teaching of RE in schools. The comprehensive planning for each unit not only ensures continuity and coherence but also saves valuable time for teachers. Progression is built in through conceptual strands which run from Reception to KS3 and are supported by detailed disciplinary and substantive knowledge. The syllabus reflects current thinking and the many changes that have taken place since the previous one was implemented. It incorporates both religious and non-religious perspectives, reflecting inclusion as well as diversity.
Schools may purchase supporting resources which emphasise a worldviews approach by looking at religions and worldviews through the eyes of children who belong to them. This brings life to the syllabus and enables pupils to engage more effectively with the materials.
By engaging with this syllabus, pupils will gain knowledge, skills, and an understanding of a wide range of religions and worldviews, making it possible for them to play a full part in a diverse society. This will enable them, over time, to navigate an increasingly complex world.
This syllabus has the potential to transform teaching and learning, achieve high quality RE for all and enrich community cohesion for all our children and young people.
